“Your addiction is not you, but it feels like you because you’ve spent so much intimate time together.” – Toni Sorenson
No parent, person, relative, or friend wants to accept that someone they love is living with a substance use disorder. The truth of the matter is that it does happen – nearly every day. While there is hope, there are many still looking to find the answers to leave it all behind.
In 2021, almost 17 per 100,000 Texans died from a substance overdose. There is no way to know if these happened accidentally or the result of a substance use disorder. What we do know is that someone lost their life, leaving behind only memories for their loved ones.
Reflections Lifestyle Center understands the unique differences between substances and subsequently substance use disorders. We offer a flexible, welcoming program that identifies these challenges and puts together a path to healing specifically for you.
Substance use disorders (SUD) occur from taking legal or illicit substances to the point that the body and mind become dependent on them. This does not happen overnight – substance use disorder stems from consistent use, which leads to building tolerance. Tolerance occurs when the body becomes used to the amount being taken, requiring more to achieve the same effects.
SUD also develops as a coping mechanism. The person takes a substance to feel good because the brain releases chemicals to reflect those feelings. When times are difficult, stressful, or painful, the person takes the substance to make these feelings go away. On the opposite side, when the person is happy or joyous about something, the substance is taken to amplify these feelings.
Reflections Lifestyle Center has a team of highly skilled professionals who understand all forms of substance use disorder. Our program is suited for adolescents ages 10-18 and adults ages 18-65.
The way Reflections Lifestyle Center goes about treatment is through flexibility. We offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults and adolescents. Both programs include group and individual therapies, coping and life skill building, and a unique element we call REFLECT. REFLECT incorporates the holistic side of recovery, including yoga, meditation, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and more. These models sculpt the path to a successful recovery from substance use disorders.
For adults, PHP and IOP take place during the day, evening, and virtually. This allows us to adapt to various scheduling needs. For adolescents, daytime programming takes place from 9 am-4:30 pm, including a dedicated 2-hour time slot for schooling. Google Classroom and Chromebooks are a part of the schooling program.
Treating substance use disorders is complex as no two people share the same past. The goal of treatment is to address each individual’s needs and provide methods that work to accomplish their desired outcomes. Some will have past trauma as their primary focus, while others need extra time to learn about mental health and how it affects them. Your treatment path will be tailored so that you will be equipped to leave substances behind. daytime programming takes place from 9 am-4:30 pm, including a dedicated 2-hour time slot for schooling. Google Classroom and Chromebooks are a part of the schooling program.
Partial hospitalization programming (PHP) involves daily visits to the treatment facility during the day or evening for different sessions. These will include therapies such as cognitive behavioral, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care to begin diving into the root causes of substance use disorder. Coping skill development classes will also take place, helping you learn what strategies work best when you are facing stressful times. PHP gives you the flexibility of a rigorous program while allowing you to return home each day after treatment. Home responsibilities are important, making PHP a great option for those who have outside obligations.
Reflections Lifestyle Center offers a PHP program for adults and adolescents. The adult program has options for evening, daytime, or virtual sessions in order to offer as much flexibility as possible. The adolescent program operates during the day, leaving the evening hours free for family time.
Intensive outpatient programming (IOP) is similar to PHP except sessions are not as long and do not occur as frequently. Your care team will help you determine how often you come in for treatment and therapies. Some will start in IOP while others will transition into it at a different time. At Reflections Lifestyle Center, IOP is available for both adolescents and teens.
Outpatient rehab services are a transitional stage where you are coming to the facility less and reintegrating into your regular life more. Your care team will work with you to develop an aftercare plan once outpatient treatment is complete. They are always available for support even after you leave the facility. The team at Reflections Lifestyle Center understands this transition can seem scary, which is why we stay by your side every step of the way. Should a return to use happen, we welcome you back without judgment and are dedicated to ensuring your success.
Addiction is a very broad and unconducive term that doesn’t define what we are really talking about, which is substance use disorders. Anyone who has developed physical and psychological dependence on a substance can be considered to have a substance use disorder. This applies to both legal and illicit substances.
Those living with a substance use disorder will experience negative symptoms when the substance is not present in their body – known as withdrawal. Not every substance will cause the same symptoms, and some withdrawals are more dangerous than others. For example, alcohol withdrawal can lead to seizures while opioid withdrawal can cause severe abdominal cramping. In most cases, all substance withdrawals will cause poor mental health, including increased depression and anxiety.
Besides the body being dependent, the mind also develops a need for the substance. Taking substances often starts recreationally, but as use continues, it becomes a coping mechanism. Times of stress, sadness, and even happiness are associated with the use of the substance. It isn’t easy to suddenly remove it, especially without other, healthier coping mechanisms in place.
Substance use disorders can quickly take over your life, even before you realize it. Think back over the past few months and your substance use. Have you tried to stop taking the substance but been unsuccessful? Have you lost a job or a relationship over your substance use? Are your finances becoming affected by the substance(s) of choice? Has your physical health begun to decline, such as dental problems, stomach issues, or skin changes? Have you experienced an overdose? If you find yourself answering “yes” to these questions, it may be a good time to start thinking about a substance use disorder treatment program.
Ultimately, it is your decision on how you move forward in your life. Substance use disorders do not go away overnight, and many need help to discontinue their use. There is no shame in reaching out for support and care. Here at Reflections Lifestyle Center, we welcome all who come through our doors, no matter their background.
