Alcoholism Treatment

Man

You can smell it on your teen’s breath when they walk through the door – they were out drinking again, in broad daylight nonetheless. Or maybe it is your partner, stumbling in when they should have been home hours ago. It could be you, staring in the mirror wondering if you will ever be able to stop drinking.

You are not alone, alcohol has affected many here in the Longhorn state. Between 2021 and 2022, 10% of residents age 12 and older reported having an alcohol use disorder in Texas. In the age group of 18-25, this number rose to 15%.

Reflections Lifestyle Center understands that alcohol use disorder can affect anyone, not just adults. Our alcohol use disorder treatment program is designed to fit the various needs that each age group requires while providing flexible options to accommodate different schedules.

What We Treat: Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder is a mental health condition that affects many different ages and nationalities. In 2023, almost 29 million people living in the U.S. ages 12 and over were diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder. When alcohol is consumed, it enters the bloodstream and affects how the brain functions. At first, alcohol causes feelings of relaxation. As drinking continues, cognitive functions begin to decline. Coordination and speech are most affected.

Chronic drinking will lead to rewiring of pathways in the brain, resulting in a physical dependence on alcohol. When this occurs, the brain and body trigger withdrawal symptoms to show that more alcohol is needed. The person will begin to crave alcohol, and depending on the severity of their disorder, they will do anything to get their next drink. The people they love around them no longer matter, as long as they can get more alcohol. This is not always noticeable, some find ways to mask their drinking to the point that even their loved ones are unaware of the circumstances. Lying, sneaking, and hiding can all be part of alcohol use disorders, which can increase the severity in mental health as well.

Reflections Lifestyle Center offers a full-spectrum program to treat alcohol use disorder. Our treatment options are for adolescents between ages 10 and 18 as well as adults ages 18-65.

How We Treat: PHP and IOP at Reflections Lifestyle Center

Reflections Lifestyle Center believes in treating alcohol use disorder through methods that don’t uproot your life. We offer partial hospitalization programming (PHP) and intensive outpatient programming (IOP) for adults and adolescents.

PHP consists of daily treatments at our facility, though virtual options are available for some cases. You will meet individually with a therapist and participate in group activities and skill-building classes. Social skills, nutrition, healthy relationships, and self-esteem building are all an integral part of our program. You will learn where your alcohol use disorder stems from and how you can manage stress in a healthy way in the future.

IOP is similar to PHP but treatment does not occur as often and does not last the entire day. You will have the same structured programming either in person or virtually. The goal of both PHP and IOP is to offer treatment plans that allow you to be home and manage your responsibilities.

Specialized programming is available for adolescents. Google Classroom utilization is available so school remains a top priority. Chromebooks are also available. For those who need assistance getting here, transportation arrangements can be made.

Treatment Options for Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol use disorder does not begin overnight, and there are different scenarios that can trigger the condition. Therefore, treatment options are not “one size fits all.” You may need more support in the beginning than someone else, which is perfectly okay. The goal of treatment is to meet your individual needs.

Partial Hospitalization Programming (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programming (PHP) is a form of treatment that involves coming to the facility during the day and typically returning home for the evening. While at the treatment center, you will participate in different therapies, skill-building classes, and counseling to promote healthy habits. Group activities will help you develop social skills and learn to manage stress and anxiety. Individual therapy sessions are your time to dive into the root causes of your drinking, learning where it began and how to cope in the future.

At Reflections Lifestyle Center, our PHP is offered to adults and adolescents. Adult programming is offered during the day, evening, and virtually.

Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programming (IOP) also involves coming to the facility for therapies and treatment, though they do not occur as frequently as in a PHP. Similar therapy options will be provided in group and individual settings while building social and life skills for the future. Wellness components including nutrition and meditation will also create healthy habits for when treatment is complete. Reflections Lifestyle Center offers IOP for adults and adolescents during the day, evening, and virtually.

Outpatient Rehab Services

Outpatient rehab services provide similar therapies and classes as PHP and IOP, but less frequently. Sessions take place as often or as little as you and your care team decide. At this point, it may not be required to come to the facility – some provide virtual options. Reflections Lifestyle Center offers in-person or virtual outpatient services, depending on your unique needs.

Continuing Care After Rehab Is Complete

Continuing care is a path that will be customized to your goals and wants. This can include seeing your therapist regularly, meeting with a mental health professional for medication, checking in with a medical doctor to ensure physical health, and attending support groups. Your care team will help you establish what your aftercare plan will look like and what outlets will provide the best outcomes for you.

Though not part of everyone’s story, a return to alcohol use can happen while in recovery after rehab is complete. This is not a failure – you are human and deserve grace. Your care team will direct you on the best steps to move forward and get you back on track in your recovery plan. Reflections Lifestyle Center welcomes all clients back after a return to use, along with those looking for extra support during stressful times.

What Exactly Is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism and alcohol addiction are both outdated terms as they do not highlight the specific mental and behavioral patterns that define an alcohol use disorder (AUD).

AUD describes someone who is physically dependent on alcohol. The body requires alcohol to function, making the brain send signals for this need. If this need is not met, withdrawal and cravings set in, creating behavioral changes in the person. They often do whatever they can to get alcohol, which may include lying, stealing, and hiding their drinking.

Causes and Risk Factors of Alcohol Use Disorder

The exact causes behind alcohol use disorder are not fully understood as they can vary from person-to-person. Genetics, environmental factors, and social impact are all contributing factors for the possible development of an alcohol use disorder. There are risk factors that increase this likelihood, including:

  • Beginning drinking at an early age such as early to mid-teens
  • Steadily increasing the amount you drink over time
  • Having a family history of alcohol use disorders
  • Experiencing peer pressure from friends to drink more
  • Having a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Going through adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as abuse, neglect, and poverty

How to Know if You Need Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder

Even if your friends and family mention your drinking seems to be a problem, the decision ultimately lies with how you feel and what you want to do. The only person who can really tell if you’re ready for treatment is you. If you are on the fence about seeking treatment, ask yourself these questions based on the last 12 months:

  • Have you consumed alcohol in large amounts over a long period of time, even when unintended
  • Have you tried to cut back or stop drinking and been unsuccessful?
  • Have you missed social, recreational, or familial activities/responsibilities due to alcohol use?
  • Have you lost a job or been formally disciplined at work for performance due to alcohol consumption?
  • Have you ever acted recklessly while drinking such as driving a vehicle or engaging in other substance use?
  • Have you experienced withdrawal symptoms (shaking, sweating, cravings, irritability) between bouts of drinking?
  • Have you continued drinking despite physical or psychological harm? For example, worsening depression or liver complications did not stop your drinking?

If you find yourself answering yes to these questions, it won’t hurt to consider an alcohol use disorder treatment program. There are options that do not involve going to a hospital and being away from family. Reflections Lifestyle Center offers flexible, effective programming to treat your alcohol use disorder on a schedule that fits your needs.
